PASTOR DAVID JONES - May, 2010

Navigation is an exact science. It does not matter whether you are cruising on or under the ocean, flying the friendly skies, or traveling in space. The safety and destination of the passengers is critical to the accuracy of the various instruments that have been used by Navigators and pilots over the centuries. New technology continues to update and improve these instruments, but one thing remains true, calculating directions immediately is a must if we are going to arrive at our pin-pointed destination later.

Peter Ifland was speaking one day at the Physics Museum at the University of Coimbra. He made the following quote: "Where are we? Well yes, we are sitting up here safe and dry in the Science Museum at the University of Coimbra, but the question has different urgency when the ship is approaching a rocky coast and the life of the ship and it's crew depends on a fast and accurate answer. It's the Navigators job to discover our correct position and guide us to the correct destination."

We are all Navigators in this journey of life. Perhaps our children, family and friends are looking unto us to help guide them (as well as ourselves) through to their ultimate destination.

The Hebrew writer in Hebrews 2:1-4 explains the need to pay attention to the things we have heard. What things? Chapter one of Hebrews clearly bears witness to Jesus Christ who is the Ultimate Statement (see Hebrews 1:1-2). The remainder of chapter one accurately and precisely describes Jesus as God Incarnate. Again in chapter two the writer exhorts us to pay attention to Jesus and His gospel. Why should we pay attention?
The answer is in Hebrews 2:1.... so that we will not drift away.

An unknown source writes; There was an old sailor who repeatedly got lost at sea, so his friends gave him a compass and urged him to use it. The next time he went out in his boat, he followed their advice and took the compass with him. But as usual he became hopelessly confused and was unable to find land. Finally he was rescued by his friends. Disgusted and impatient with him they asked " Why didn't you use the compass we got you? You could have saved us a lot of trouble !"
The sailor responded " I didn't care to! I wanted to go north, but as hard as I tried to make the needle aim in that direction, it just kept on pointing southeast." The old sailor was so certain he knew which way was north that he stubbornly tried to force his own personal persuasion on his compass. Unable to do so, he tossed it aside as worthless and failed to benefit from the guidance it offered.

Hebrews 2:3 says " How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation...."
Let's not be like the stubborn sailor. May the Lord help us to read, hear, and obey the true compass of God's Word. May we humbly respond to what it says, and worship
the ONE ( the Lord Jesus Christ) that it bears witness to.
Then and only then will we be on the right path and safely arrive at our Divine destination.
